Not sure the wood type but it will stain darker than the rest of the cedar. Make sure to prep well first.

Crown side does not matter so much, but you may not be able to get those joist stains out of the wood. It is deep into the grain.

Floor buffer with sanding pad is the easiest way. It will not reduce absorption. You get the pads at the rental yard. They are either white or red.
