I recently stained my deck with TWP Stain. I am pleased with the product and look forward to how it performs over the next couple of years.
I found the application with a brush to be easy on the vertical and the top side of horizontal boards. The stain absorbed well. Where there was some pooling of stain, I wiped it with a rag to avoid some of the problems other users seem to have had. I applied a second coat within 30 minutes and let the product cure.
The main problem I had was staining the underside of my deck boards. The stain (probably all stains) is fairly thin and the stain quickly ran back down the brush, my arm, etc.... It was quite the mess. I then tried a painting pad. This was a better process, but still quite messy.
So, there must be a better process. I had considered using a garden sprayer but by the time I had done both the brushing and pad application, I was 1/2 done so I just finished the job. I also wasn't that keen on the idea of spraying an oil based stain vertically.
What process should I use when I do a maintenance coat in the future?
There is no easy way to apply a deck stain to the undersides of a deck. It will run no mater what and a stain pad is best. One thing to note, there is no need to stain the undersides of a deck. Only reason would be for appearance.
Thanks for the quick reply. My third approach would have been a roller but I think that would have been just as messy. I have read comments before that the underside staining is not needed. I have a walkout basement and I wanted to spruce up the underside purely for appearance reasons. It definitely looks nice. The simple cleaning and brightening got the area to "B" rating. The staining got me to an "A" rating.
Thanks again.
