I installed a brand new deck June 2019 and it is time for its first staining. We used Premium Pine wood, not the basic pine wood you get at a Home Depot or Lowes, but a higher quality wood. The deck gets direct sun from morning until around 4pm in the summer months. It is also surrounded by very mature trees so it gets a lot of green scum and other pollen droppings. Can I get recommendations on high quality stains to consider. Also, suggestions on oil or water based?

Look at prepping first with a deck cleaner and then a wood brightener. Try the Restore-A-Deck Kits. As for the stain, try Restore A Deck Semi-Transparent Stain or Armstrong Clark in a Semi-Transparent.

Will it need a deck cleaner first being just under a year old? Also, what does a wood brightener do?

Yes, you must clean and brighten the deck for prep. It removes the oxidation, mill glaze and opens the pores of the wood so the stain can soak in. You cannot skip the prep steps.

We had a deck built in 2015 with KDAT lumber. our contractor recommended we wait 6 months then use TWP. We had to drive 50 miles to get it and it was expensive. we followed the directions, applied it - and it looked awful. We contacted TWP and their rep came out and told us there must have been a finish on the wood. Our contractor then told us there IS a finish on KDAT wood that needs to be pressure washed off prior to staining. The TWP rep sent us TWP stripper and more TWP stain. We elected to strip the deck, but use Thompson Transparent which worked great on our fence. It looked like garbage on our deck and did not last. We have now stripped the deck in prep to put down Deck Over but halted when I read the reviews. WHAT can we put on this deck - short of tearing it out and replacing it with TREX?

Sorry I couldn’t figure out where to post my question.
I need to clean a deck which was stained with Cabot acrylic solid color stain. Live on the water in Washington state and the deck is green with algae. What are my best options. Do I need to strip the stain dice it has rubbed off in places? I have previously used wet and forget. It didn’t really remove the black stains. It needs a good cleaning.
I’d like to do it properly and efficiently.
