--Live in San Francisco
--North Facing deck off of house. Not a lot of sun. It can get pretty wet back in the yard with fog.
--Want to use IPE or Camaru (prefer Camaru for color, but am open to change)
--How do I protect this deck? I see product referrals, but it all is a bit confusing? What is the best product to use?
--Structure will be redwood.
--Do I stain the redwood prior to framing? If not, when to stain? What product?
--Should I take the joists with protective tape? My sense is no.
--Do I stain the IPE/Camaru before installation the entire board. I will let acclimatize prior to install. Should I stain then prior to install. Although not clear, I understand I should wait 2 to 3 months.
--I am aware of wax on ends of boards following cuts to avoid checking on the ends of the boards
--Face nailing. We want to face nail versus using clips? Are there any problems with this? We will then use plugs with glue--Any things to be aware of here on glue or plugs?
--Cupping--the deck is off of my house 2 feet to 3 feet depth. The depth then shortens to where the deck is almost level with the ground. I live on a hill, with backyard sloping upwards. After about 5 feet out from my house, there is a old concrete deck structure-large square 17 feet deep by 25 wide, which means my deck will be above concrete. Should I cover the cement with a vapor barrier? I am planning on using 5/4 x 6 x 20 ft boards. Deck is 20 deep by 25 wide.
Any help or tips is greatly appreciated. Charles.
-See this about hardwood decks and stains to use:
-No need to stain the framing. Leave as is.
-No need to tape the joists.
-We have no experience with face nailing vs. clips. We do not install decks.
-It will be 5 feet above the concrete. That will not create moisture issues.
