I understand from a previous post that Wood rx is currently being evaluated as deck stain product by the testing crew on this website?
I had a few questions about your thoughts. How far along is the testing of this product? And are there any initial thoughts based on what has been observed regarding whether or not it is likely that you will be recommending Woodrx for use?
The reason I ask is that I have used test samples of both Woodrx and Defy Extreme. Both seem to be decent products. However, I prefer the color options available with Woodrx, so would probably prefer to use that unless there are good reasons to strongly consider otherwise.
My deck is pressure treated, has no prior finishes, has been cleaned, powerwashed, and brightened. I am in PA.
One concern I had was that the Woodrx is a "Silicone modified Acrylic", and I have read that such products may create a film on the surface more than penetrate the wood. Thus, making it susceptible to peeling rather than penetrating and wearing evenly. However, from discussion with Woodrx reps, they say that it will wear evenly and that peeling and durability is not a concern. I don't know which is true.
I have also read that acrylic stains may also make it more problematic to remove in the future if necessary if we want to change stains?
On the other side, Defy Extreme appears to be an epoxy resin based stain and I really don't have a good idea of which of these two delivery vehicles would be best or if both are good. I would assume that Defy would also be difficult to remove in the future as well.
Any thoughts (good and bad) from your evaluation on Woodrx thus far would be much appreciated!
Thanks.
We have not tested/reviewed the Wood Rx as of yet but have used it. In our experience the Defy extreme will penetrate better which means less chance of filling/peeling. Defy is much easier to remove in the future since it does not film on top of the wood like an acrylic will.
Ok, thanks.
Do you have any initial opinions on Wood Rx as a product based on your actual use so far?... Particularly regarding wearability and durability of the initial application.
Have you actually had peeling / lifting of the Wood Rx, or just note that its a potential with that product?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks!
It seems to apply okay for an acrylic but honestly we have not been back to view it so cannot say what it looks like currently. It has potential to peel as it did not penetrate all the way which is normal. Better than most acrylics as far a penetration.
Thanks. That insight is helpful.
It may be worthwhile to post any update here in the future regarding any other observations you end up having on the WoodRx if you're able to review that previous application again.
We will. Thanks
