Look at Armstrong Clark in Amber or Defy Hardwood Natural Pine. Might want to get some samples so you do not have to do this again.

Cabot changed their formula so it is not the same as it used to be. AC makes a very good semi-transparent.

You should be able to strip now. Yes on the brighten. It may be hard to remove all since it was just applied. Try for 80-90%.

Strip and start over. You will not be able to blend this. It needs to be applied all at once and second coats need to applied wet on wet within 60 min...

Prep with a Restore A Deck Kit and pressure washing. Stain with TWP 1500 Series or Armstrong Clark.

You could, but it may gum up the sanding paper to the point it will not work well. Your stain had not cured yet. I would ask him.
