I just stained 15 month old pressure treated deck with defy extreme cedar tone. Nothing had been done to deck prior. I did the prep work myself, defy wood cleaner and brightner, then paid someone to stain it. The railings came out great, however, the deck boards are somewhat blotchy. Is this due to prep or application? It was a sunny day so my first thought was the stain may have been drying before second coat was applied. Are there any options, other than stripping it all, to correct this? I am in north Florida. Deck gets about 7 hours full sun.

Probably not the prep but the application. Where two coats applied "wet on wet"?

Yes two coats were applied wet on wet. However, it was vey hot and sunny which makes me believe it was possible they did not get the second coat on before it may have dried in places???
Or it may have possibly pooled in those areas??? They did apply with brush. No roller/sprayer.
Also there were a few obvious drips. Can we sand these small drips out and reapply stain on just those spots? Rather than strip and restrain we will live with it until it wears.

It is not really possible to "spot" fix a stain. It will look like you did. I am pretty sure they did not apply it evenly and quickly enough. Only way to fix properly would be to remove. It is difficult to remove a newly installed stain. If it was me I would leave it alone and do a light coat in the Spring.

Same boat here. Started staining deck today (4 years old PTP, Defy Extreme; stripped old stuff, used brightener, and sanded some parts). The sun really started drying it out quick so I decided to do the part (to left in photo) that was in shade. I did my best to feather it out so that I wouldn't have such a noticeable line when I came back tonight to continue where I left off. Due to time constraints I really couldn't do it all in one step.

The picture is somewhat exaggerated....didn't seem to look that bad in person. But I did try sanding two of the junctions between this morning's and tonight's jobs and touched up a little. I will check in the morning.

What is the best course of action?

Thanks.

Strip and start over. You will not be able to blend this. It needs to be applied all at once and second coats need to applied wet on wet within 60 minutes of each other. Applying a wet coat on a dry coat the next day will cause a failure as the first coat has already cured.

Cool thanks. That's what I was thinking. Do I need to wait any time frame? It will strip off ok? I assume I should also brighten like before?

You should be able to strip now. Yes on the brighten. It may be hard to remove all since it was just applied. Try for 80-90%.
