I contacted Cabot with my question but never heard back from them... I had put on too much Cabot semi-transparent stain and now it's more like a solid stain. I tried wiping with a cloth soaked with mineral spirits and also tried a cloth soaked with turpentine (not at the same time). Neither removed any of the stain. I just want to be able to wipe off enough so I can see the grain a bit... any ideas?

Not possible. You would need to strip it all off and start over.

I used Cabots natural stain on my new cedar deck and it peeled off. I contacted them and they told me I must have put on too much, I don't think so. When I contacted them and they said they would reimburse me for the stain and since then have NOT heard a thing, even though I contacted them a number of times. I ended up sanding the whole deck to remove the 1/2 peeled spots, a very big job for an 80 year old woman. Hope you get better luck than I had with Cabots.

It is possible to over apply any stain. This can result in failing of the stain faster then normal. This can happen for even our top rated stains. Most common reasons for a deck stain failure are improper prepping and over application. Not saying that you did but it is the number one reasons for failure.

I cannot believe you did the sanding by yourself! That is great that you are taking such great care of your deck even at a young 80!
