I'm looking for something for my new cedar fence and I checked out several brands (Defy, TWP, Armstrong, etc.) and they either aren't available in Canada or the web site they suggest to buy it from ships using UPS which is a horrendously expensive way to have products shipped to Canada so that's out.
I had enough trouble finding something for my Pedra deck and in the end I only found one exotic hardwood exterior stain I could easily get. It seems that you reviewed their semi-transparent stain and the review wasn't all that stellar so although we're liking our hardwood stain so far, I'm not sure if I want to give the semi-transparent a shot on the fence.
Can anyone point me in the direction for stain advice in Canada? I can easily get Benjamin Moore or Sikkens. The BM review here states it does poorly in cold climates and a good majority of our year is snow and cold. And I've used Sikkens on my past 2 house fences and a deck and I was not happy with it's application, the look or how long it lasted so I don't want to choose Sikkens this time.
If you can list all the stains that are available to you in Canada then we can narrow down which are the best.
Thank you!
Off the top of my head, this is what I've seen recently in the local paint stores and big box stores:
SuperDeck
Sikkens
Benjamin Moore
Flood
WoodPride
CIL
Sico
Behr
Rona store brand
Sherwin Williams
Messmer's
If everything listed is crap, I can call around to see if anyone carries anything else. And also Google to see if there's something I can order from elsewhere in Canada.
My fence is on the south side of a corner lot so will get full sun. It snows here as early as late October (but sometimes not until December) and snow stays until at least early April, sometimes as late as May. Our highs and lows range from around 86°F to -22°F to but can go higher and lower.
I'm looking for something that applies smoothly and evenly, doesn't require a ton of prep when I need to redo in a few years, and doesn't flake off.
I've used Benjamin Moore opaque stain before and it did really well in our weather on a south side fence, but I'm not looking for opaque this time. Sikkens never seems to apply evenly for me and it wears really quickly. Our current deck has the SuperDeck exotic hardwood stain and it applied nicely and is doing decently well after a year with the deck on the south corner, east side of the house with no roof or pergola over it.
I would look at Messmers or Super Deck from the ones you listed.
I am also a Canadian searching desperately for good stain, but in my case I am trying to stain a new cedar pergola and so it's all vertical surfaces that won't be tread upon, but will get a lot of sun and weathering. Being already built that means ease of application is an important factor, as is durability and ease of re-application.
In addition to the list above, a local paint store also has Duckback and TimberPro. Thanks!
Duckback and SuperDeck are the same thing. Never used TimberPro.

Thank you. For the SuperDeck, should I be considering the Transparent or the Semi-Transparent? Again, it's for a new cedar fence on south side, cold Canadian winters and hot summers (not Texas hot though! ;))
Also, for the Messmer's, it seems they don't have both transparent and semi-transparent options? The product I would use would be the UVPlus, right? Does it offer a transparent or semi-transparent finish?
And thanks again for your help!
I just found a retailer in the Toronto area that sells Penofin so I'll be giving that a try. Thanks for the response.
Administrator, do you recommend Messmers and Super Deck/Duckback products in general? I'm looking for a good stripper and then brightener at the moment, preferably biodegradable, but quality is top priority.
We are not huge fans of Superdeck. Messmers is better in our opinion.
