I admit that I am overwhelmed and confused by reading the web for the last 4 hours trying to decipher stain reviews and peoples' opinions. I am staining cedar trim (not smoothly sanded) that receives strong Florida sun and I am looking for ease of application for future coats. Currently it has Cabot 3000 oil based sealer that is extremely weathered. I am considering Defy Extreme semi transparent for it's high UV protection but have questions:

1. Is there a problem applying the water based Defy over the oil based Cabot?

2. I believe I read that I would have to sand the Defy off when I restain in a couple (I hope) years, is this true?

3. Would the Armstrong Clark, TWP or TimberOil be a better options given as being oil based.

Thanks in advance.

1. You would need to prep the siding by removing the oil based Cabot by using a stain stripper.
2. You just clean and recoat the Defy in the future.
3. All the stains you mentioned would work well as well.
