Looks like Pine, but not good at identifying wood
No mold issues
No previous stain
I have a deck that is about 15 years old, and I don't know think it has been sealed since soon after being built, and has definitely not been stained. The boards have ridges and other irregularities, some possibly caused by too aggressive power washing (I've attached a picture if that is helpful). Is it necessary for them to be smooth before sealing/staining? I've sanded with 80 grit and even some 40 grit, but it will take quite a bit more to smooth out all of the indentations. I was going to use Behr until coming across your site - thanks, so now plan to use TWP 100. I did a light power wash prior to sanding. Since there probably hasn't been any stain applied previously, is any other prep needed?
Thanks,
Steve

Looks good to stain with the TWP 100 series now.

Just to verify - I haven't used any cleaner or brightener, only sanding and power wash. Will that be detrimental to proper penetration of the stain?

Not at this point. It may help to "clean" it a little better though.
