We have a Mahogany deck that's about 14 years old and in pretty good shape, we cleaned & re-stained it over the years and about 6 years ago stripped it and re-stained it all using at the time FLOOD'S product called SPA and Deck an acrylic based stain which was like semitransparent, but it would peal on some occasions and was a very involved multilevel application process. Before we installed the decking we coated all 6 sides of the boards. So now I'm way behind in refinishing my deck , about 3-4 years since I put anything on it. Issue is they don't make that product anymore. So I want to use something else and was researching your very good Deck finishing site...  Leaning toward the "Armstrong Clark Semi transparent" oil based, Or the "Defy Extreme Wood Stain" But that one is water based, Should I stay with a water based one or I heard oil based is better for woods like Mahogany? My deck is in partial shade, is Mahogany, live in northeast Ohio, lots of snow, some slight mildew and mold. But my railing and cross beams and 4x4 beams and rail support  is cedar the railing is actually  3/4 inch planks that are 6 inches wide since I cut a decorative Alpine  heart design  in them, with a top rail that is Mahogany. So I might have to re-strip all the railing components ( 75 % OF RAILING COMPONENTS are in good shape has some rot I will have to replace pieces of wood though)  to match the new deck board coloring? MY questions are what steps do you recommend I do to totally redo my deck to make it match with a new stain, I previously used a cedar tone colored semi trans. stain . Are my two choices of Stain mentioned above good to use? Or is one better than the other for my application? Thanks in advance  for you reply.

You cannot apply any other brand over what you have so your biggest hurdle is the full removal of the current stain and that most likely will involve power sanding.

Once removed, you would clean and brighen all wood for final prep. After this is done you can use any of the stain brands that you like. The Armstrong Clark works better on the Mahogany but Defy makes excellent stains as well.
