My railings were treated with penofin red label approx 3 years ago. How do I strip them w/o hurting the Trex deck? Also - I'm thinking of switching over to Cabot Australian Timber Oil.
What would be a good plan to tackle this? I'm in Prescott AZ.
Thank you!
Strip and brighten for prep with Restore A Deck Kits:
It does not harm Trex. Try a better brand of stain than Penofin or Cabot:
Awesome thanks very much - I thought these were good brands - I have a new trex/redwood deck out front that is treated with Cabot - lovely. I will look into others.
With my new deck (Cabot) can I just apply Cabot once a year to keep it looking nice? Give it a quick rinse and dry?
Thanks again!
We would never use the Cabot based on changes in formulas recently. Try a better brand as the products are not the same anymore.
See here for new wood tips:
Thanks - it is my understanding that the Cabot I have is the old style un-changed oil that isn't allowed to be used in some states due to environmental reasons - ex California. So it is probably the good old stuff and like I said looks stunning and can still be used here in AZ. I remember the paint store telling me about the new formula - and to avoid it.
I think my plan will be to use the deck strip/cleaner you folks have recommended on the back - and also use the top rated stuff you have also recommended.
But for the front I think I'll ride out the Cabot and re-treat with it until something changes - I can't imagine stripping it - my wife would shoot me.
Thanks very much!
No, it is not the origianl good stuff and they changed all their formulas when they sold the company to Zinser. None of it is the same as it used to be.
