After contractor did TSP power wash as prep on 10 year old maintained pressure treated pine deck, the heartwood is dark, almost black.
Tried a test brushing with semi-trans TWP stain and the grain still looks dark/ black......not a good look, but I want to see the grain, not hide it. Any suggestions to lighten up the heartwwod grain?

Did he use a wood brightener? That should help lower the pH level and lighten the wood.

No....only did a lite sanding, very uneven in areas, some down to bare wood, some areas still see old stain.
What`s your reccommendation on a britener?

Here`s a photo of the deck.
Tried Sikkens translucent cedartone on left.
Tried TWP 1501 cedartone on right.
Both look terrible..............the black appearance of the wood grain after the stain application doesn`t look good.
The only prep the contractor did was powerwash with TSP, then litely sand. The sanding was very inconsistant.
What would correct this poor appearance before we stain the entire deck with the TWP semi trans cedartone.
I want to see the grain, not hide it. Thanks.

You have a lot of old stain that needs to be removed. I would strip it all off with a deck stain stripper then follow up with a wood brightener.
