Help please..
Our dock and decks were done a couple years ago with Behr's Stain. It has not lasted the 6 years it was supposed to and now needs to be redone.
We are looking at the new DeckOver wood coating by Behr. Has anyone had experience or could make a good recommendation for product use on the south east coast which is hot and we have salt water spray.

Nothing lasts more than 2-3 years and while the Deckover is new, we would not use any Behr product ever due to their poor history with deck stains.

Remove the Behr first and stain with Armstrong Clark in a semi-solid color for your high UV dock and decks.

Our local ABC news in the Tampa Bay area just had a deck stain spot in conjunction with Consumers Reports and they highly recommended Behr stains.

my mother has a very old deck that she wants to use deck over or rust-oleum restore on. All of the reviews look terrible for this type of product, in ease of application, look, and durability. Does anyone know of a product that would work well on an old deck? She wants me to do the work for her, and of course I don't want to spend a full-time week doing it.

Nothing lasts what they claim. 2-3 years is the max you will get on a deck and many times it us much less then that. As contractors we prefer semi-transparents stains that penetrate into the wood, show natural wood grain, and allow ease of future applications. Any of the higher rated stains that we review will work well.

I used Behrs solid color stain three years ago and the horizontal pieces look terrible. It was rated for 30 years! (Yeah, right!) Since I can't see the wood grain anyway, what about using porch paint?

That will peel as well.

Should I just cover the peeled places with more Behr? Or should I sand the whole deck to get up the solid stain? Thanks for your advice. This is a great forum!

If you just cover the Behr it will be easier but it will not fix the problem so it will peel again. Sanding is very hard though to remove a solid stain.

What would you suggest then for a deck in West Virginia in full sun made of pressure treated wood that doesn't have a mold or mildew problem? It's about 10 years old and has Behrs solid stain on it that's peeling on the horizontals. Thanks for you help.

Strip off what you can. Sand any peeling areas off. This will prep for another solid stain.
