I have read that RAD, Defy, HD80 etc strippers will not work on solid stains and that I need to sand to remove the solid stain. However, if I am planning to use the same solid stain over it, can I use these strippers? All I want to do is to get the loose paint off.

I will be redoing my deck, currently Behr solid natural cedar look. 2 year old deck. Would like redo to two tone look. Rails - solid color, to match the house. The floor - would like to make a natural semi - solid look.
Recommendation on products - best action plan, thank you

You will have to sand it off the floor if you want to go with a semi-solid look. Once completely sanded then you can use a penetrating semi-solid like the Armstrong Clark in one of their 4 semi-solid colors. Prep the rails by pressure washing to remove any loose solid stain and then re-stain with any high quality solid color deck stain.

Thank you for the response. I live in Charlotte, NC, fairly humid/hot summers, which high quality solid color deck stain would you recommend. Also i have the restore-a-deck combo kit (cleaner/brightner) do i need to use it at any time ?

Use the kit after the sanding of the solid stain. Use Flood Solid stain for the rails or Cabot.
