Our deck was previously stained and sealed with Thompson's semi-transparent about 18 months ago. I haven't been happy with the product and since we saw this spring more areas where the stain had either worn off or peeled we decided to look into redoing the deck.  At first we were going to just clean and sand the areas where it was worn, but then I thought it would be too difficult and wouldn't be happy with the results.  In a test area I applied Defy stripper and then brightener tand it still has stain coming through I cannot get off.  This is typical decking material bought from Lowes.  Before doing anything else, I wanted to check what you recommended next. I can either reapply Thompson's to this small area and worry about redoing the deck in a year or two or something else, but I hate to invest any more $ into a product that isn't holding up.  I live in Raleigh NC.

Thank you,

C. Darges

I meant to include an up close picture of what the deck currently looks like.  See attached.

Are you pressure washing after applying the stripper? You would be better off removing it all now. Reapplying more on top will compound the issue and make it harder to fix later on.

No, I was using a strong water stream.

Stripper with a good pressure washer will remove most if not all.

Also, if i am stripping the entire deck, i was going to use Defy Extreme water base but now considering one of the oil base products.  Does it matter at this point since i used water based originally.  I just think the oil base products penetrate better and the finish lasts longer but i haven't used an oil base on many years so the products may have changed.

As long as you remove the Thompsons, you can use water based or oil based.
