Stripping question

I put something on the front deck at a rental property that was kind of like a stucco which was supposed to last forever but started peeling in a year.  It is half peeled off now.  It might have been Rhino Shield but I'm not sure - it was 10 years ago.  I want to strip it and stain the deck.  What product do you recommend for stripping something heavy like this off?  It peels off with my fingers in some areas, but other areas are still adhered pretty well.  Would any of the Restore a Deck products work or do you recommend something else? I've attached a photo of part of the deck. We are just trying to remove it from the floor as it is holding on pretty well to the ballisters and would be too much work to remove there, and we are capping the top rails with new wood.

Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks Scott.  We sanded the finish off of the deck floor and would like to finish it now.  Since we just sanded it, do we still need to chemically clean and brighten it before proceeding?  Also, wondering what you would recommend as a stain.  There are three identical decks (it's a triplex) and they are all on the south side, so they get a lot of sun.  I want to put something on that will last the longest as it is a big pain to have them done since it is the tenants only entrance into the home.  What product do you think would last the longest?  From your reviews, I am thinking maybe TWP?  If so, do you think the semi-transparent or the semi-solid would last longer as far as how often we would need to reapply? I have attached photos of before and after with the finish removed.  Thank you for your help - I really appreciate it.

I assume you are just doing the horizontals? TWP would work well but does not matter if semi-transparent or semi-solid. Both will wear the same.

Hi Scott,

Yes, just doing the horizontals.  I just read on the TWP website that only the 1500 series can be shipped to colorado, so the 100 series and semi-solid stain are not options.  Do you think the TWP 1500 would be the most durable option, or would something from RAD be better?

Hi Scott,

After reading more about the products I realized that the drying time for TWP is too long (12 hours) because this is the only entrance to the home, and the tenants need to be able to go in and out sooner than this, so I think we will use the RAD stain. I also like that you can clean and apply in one day and apply to damp wood which works better for my contractor.

I have two questions:

1. Is there any difference in durability between RAD semi transparent vs solid stain?

2. Do we still need to clean the wood even though we just sanded it, and do we need to brighten as well?

Thanks,

Julie

1. No, not really.

2. Yes, clean and brighten.
