I am so completely overwhelmed with this entire topic. Here is my situation...
I have a deck that is about 10 years old. Some boards needed badly replaced, so a few of them are brand new. The rest of the deck has been previously finished, but I can't tell if it was with a deck paint/resurfacer or a solid stain. It isn't peeling too badly, and where it is, it is thin pieces, which leads me to believe it is a solid stain over a resurfacer. I have obsessively been searching for the best course of action to stain/resurface the deck, but am still completely confused as what to do. I have a very limited budget and timeline, so I think stripping it is out of the question. I have cleaned and pressure washed it. Can I put a solid stain on top of the unknown solid stain/resurfacer? If so, I would be forever greatful for an product recommendations. I am more concerned with covering and protecting the wood than I am with it looking beautiful. Please help! Thank you!!

RAD’s website said they think i could use their solid stain over this without stripping, but I wasn’t sure.

If you pressure wash to remove all the stain that is peeling, you should be able to cover with a new coat of solid stain. Just make sure that you do not leave any of the current solid stain on the wood that is not solidly intact to the wood.
BTW, you cannot fully strip a solid stain. You can use a stripper though to add in removing the peeling solid stain.
