Hi, I have a relatively new fence I'm hoping to stain before the rains come in the fall. At that point the fence would only be 4months old. The website recommends restore-a-deck for new wood, and that's what I'm thinking, but want to plan ahead for the next treatment.
First, I've heard that water-based stains don't recoat well, requiring a strip before recoat. Is this true for restore-a-deck?
Second, I'm curious about the top rated TWP 100, but it's not recommended for new wood. Would it be possible to recoat the TWP oil based stain over the restore-a-deck in a few years?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
Restore A Deck is a penetrating stain so you can clean and recoat as needed. You can also use the TWP 100 Series for this. You cannot use the TWP over the RAD stain or vice versa.
Can oil based be used over each other for upcoming application, like TWP over Armstrong & vice versa, or same for water eg. Defy over RAD?
I'm actually curious to try water-based as I've only used big box store oil stains in the past. But for a DIY-selfer, do you have to be quick to wet-over-wet since drying time is fast? I'm not a fast worker. Or any other such considerations for us rank amateurs?
Much thanks.
No, whenever switching brands you should remove the previous coating. Water-based stains do dry faster so you should work a little quicker.
