Hi. So glad I found your website, and hoping you can advise. A decade ago I bought teak interlocking tiles for my balcony.  I coated it at the time (once) with "Cetol Marine Natural Teak."  I failed to re-coat it as the years went by, and it was too orange-y for my taste.  Northern exposure, no direct sun.

Over the past 2 days, I've used bleach (to clean), sanding and chemical stripping.  I just bought "Cetol SRD Transparent Matte Teak," coated one plank as a test (see the bottom plank inside the blue taped area), and am concerned again that it may be too orange-y.  I also coated a spare (previously uncoated) plank with the stuff yesterday.  (See far left in photo).  As you can see, that one is a nice color.  That said, I doubt I can get my deck tiles back to that original state for coating, unless I sand my arms off.  Photo #2 shows some tiles after I rigorously stripped and sanded them yesterday.

Not thrilled having spent $50 on a gallon of the Cetol, but if necessary, I'll buy something else today (e.g. a type of TWP?).   I would like the deck to be more of a light brown or even cedar-like color, or at least a teak-y color that isn't veering into orangeland.   Can you help?  Stay with the Cetol I bought? Go with a different Cetol, or another brand altogether?

THANKS!

You cannot make this wood type a light brown. Dark brown, yes. Cedar colors will be orange.

Thank you so much for this.  Not what I was hoping to hear, but the facts are the facts. Would a strictly transparent/natural coating with no color in it achieve a color similar to my second photo (the photo showing the results of my sanding?).

Clear coatings will not enhance or change the appearance and will not provide UV Protection.

Ok, so if you were me, would you just bite the bullet and stick with the Cetol SRD Teak I bought?  If so, should I continue sanding more than I have (the photo #2), or will the results not change enough to sweat it any further?  Thanks again, very very much.

I guess I should add one thing:  The deck has a northern exposure, and only end-of-day light on about 15% of it.  So if this means I could do without UV protection, maybe a clear coating would be fine for me to have the color that exists now on the sanded teak (in photo #2)?  It's a nice light brown look, when it's sanded/raw like this.   That's my last question, I promise!  Thank you.

Yes, you can stay with what you have. Switch next year if you want. We would not bother sanding.

Thank you again!  Will do.  But next year, should I just sand and apply a clear coating (TWP?) to match what I have in photo #2?  No UV protection needed in shade.

You still need a stain, not a clear coat. We would suggest getting a few samples to test out so you can find what you are looking for.

Hi and sorry for reaching out yet again with a final question before I coat the balcony deck today.    Each time I look at the test plank I did, I like the color produced by the CETOL SRD Teak coating  (see upper left plank).  However, that was done on a plank that never received any coating -- ever.  Do you think there's a chance that I will achieve that color when I recoat the balcony later today (after 10 years of the old CETOL MARINE Teak having been on it)?  In other words, should I, sadly, prepare to see orange?  Thank you yet again!
