Hello,
I am new to deck staining. I have a good idea of what I need to do; however, I am concerned about safety. I read about oily rags causing fires. I've read several articles about how to safely dispose of oil rags and left over stain, but am not sure what to do about the other tools I am using.
1. I plan on pouring the stain in a disposable plastic tray liner. When I am done, and the stain is dry, would the liner need to be disposed of in a special manner?
2. I plan on using disposable sponge applicators, can these catch on fire like the rags? How should these be disposed of after use?
Finally, we have a grape vine (no leaves or grapes yet) growing up the side of one of our porch legs. I can carefully stain around it, but would the stain kill the vine or cause it harm?
Thanks in advance.
1. No the liner will just need to dry.
2. We have never had an issue with pads and fire. We just let them dry out.
I doubt it will kill the vine but if stain gets on the leaves, they will turn brown.
Oily rags are an issue. You need three things to start a fire. Fuel (stain), heat (sun/temperature), and oxygen. If you take any of the three away you will not have an issue. The easiest thing to do with any oil rag is to saturate them with water when done. You can also lay them down flat and let them dry in the sun. They will not start a fire that way either. Once dry there is no issue.
Never "ball up" rags that are wet with stain and leave in or near your home!
