We have twice stained our deck frame and privacy fence with Olympic Water Repellent Oil Stain #717 and have been VERY happy with its color and durability.  We have 2 gallons left and want to know if this 10-year old oil stain should still be sufficient to use for a fresh overcoat on the previously stained wood. Only one 2x6 needs to be replaced and all other wood is in great shape.  I will stain the 2x6 two coats before installing.

I called Olympic and they said the old linseed oil-based stain would no longer have any mildew resistance but that may not be important to us.   They recommended using Olympic Maximum Stain + Sealant which is the replacement for 717.  However I see it does not get great reviews for durability and color.

Is there a better redwood color stain that I should consider?  Or will the linseed oil stain still do a good job over the previously stained wood?  Your experience and recommendations would be very helpful as I begin my project next week.

I live in Northern Virginia and we will be staining the deck in 50- 60 degree Fall weather.

I will clean the deck first with Olympic Deck cleaner or other bleach solution

If you switch stain brands, you must remove the prior coatings fully. You cannot stain over what you have. In addtion, you cannot prestain new wood. See here:

We would strip, brighten, and then stain with a better stain brand like the TWP 1500 Series or Armstrong Clark Stains.
