I have a rough cut cedar fence (44 panels that are 8' long by 6' high each) that has a fading rymar red cedar semi-transparent oil stain and sealer that's been on for maybe 10 years. As it is a large fence some areas get full sun and some get shade(some parts have mildew) I hired it out to restain it and our 2 story deck. The deck turned out great for the fence we picked a cabot's semi-transparent oil base redwood but was told we needed a semi-solid due to how much color was on the fence so we got cabot's semi-solid oil base redwood
It was put on 2 boards and looks like a winey/merlot color. We then tried cabot's mission brown semi-solid and that looks dark purple. Is this because they did not pressure was/treat/clean the rymar stain off the fence? Are we going to have to stick with rymar stain? The professional doing it thinks the cabot's just needs more red tint. The picture shows what the redwood looked like after 8 hrs. Thoughts/advice?

Well you do have to prep wood before staining but that is not why it is merlot color. I would look for TWP in your area.
