I will be finishing my deck shortly. It has been weathering/curing for about 6 months now. It is made out of treated pine and I am in NW Georgia. I plan on using TWP 1500 Honey to seal the entire deck after cleaning and brightening it. I would like to have the outer border boards be a darker color than the main deck. My question is how should I stain the outer border boards to be a different color?
One option would be to buy two colors of the TWP 1500 stain. This would seem to be a little harder to deal with due to cutting in on both sides of border when applying and due to needing 2 applicators.
The second option I considered was to use normal wood stain to darken the border boards before using the TWP 1500 over the entire surface. This seems to be the simpler approach if it is feasable. If so, is there any brand/type of stain that would be better suited for this? Would doing this prevent the TWP 1500 from penetrating and how long should I allow after the staining before applying TWP 1500?
Thanks,
John
John844, you cannot darken the boards first then apply TWP on top. You would need to get two different colors of the TWP. If it was us we would do the lighter color first take care to minimize anything getting on the border. We would then do the darker color after that dries. If you get a little bit of stain on the lighter color. It should wipe up if you get to it right away.
thank you for the advice. I am not sure I completely understand the approach. To clarify, are you saying to stain the lighter color on the entire deck including the border, or only the main portion of the deck leaving the border bare until the main portion dries?
If adding the darker color over the top of the lighter color as a second coat, how does that affect the color choice? Do they still end up being the correct color or would I need a darker color to end up looking right?
How long would you wait before applying the dark color to the border?
Do not include the border when staining with the lighter color. Let dry then do the darker.
