Hi all,

I need a recommendation for a solid stain to refinish my deck. I know from the previous owner that he used a water based UV protected stain with a redwood tint. He doesn't remember what exact stain he used, but it looks like it was a solid one. So, please help with a recommendation for a redwood solid stain... I would like to go with a Defy water based one, but could not find any solid, only semi-transparent. Deck information:

1. State you live in: Northern VA
2. Full Shade, Partial Shade, or Full Sun: Full Sun
3. Type of Wood: Redwood
4. Mold or Mildew Issues: Few spots
5. Main Issues with Previous Stains: Worn out

Also, have another question: I am planning to sand the entire deck. Do I still need to power wash it, or is sanding enough?

Thank you!

We do not review solid colors deck stains nor do we like them. They mask the wood like a paint. Since you are going this way I would suggest looking at Flood's Solid Stains or possibly Cabots.

and a light pressure washing would probably help after the sanding.

Would you recommend a water based semi-solid stain for cedar siding?

No I would not use a water based stain, oil is better.
