I live in the Bay Area of Northern California. We have a lot of suppliers of every kind of product here. I recently spoke to the resident expert on wood and deck finishes at one of the more reputable independent local stores. He said "Sansin" is one of the best wood preservatives on the market and would be the best for my application. BTW, this store sells many brands so I don't believe they have any personal interest in one product over the other.

I have two tall tree carvings I want to protect in my front yard that were carved from very large 12' elm trunks (3' - 4' dia). I already put one coat of "Superdeck" on both of them a few months back but have not been impressed with the results. Seems to have weathered away. When I got to the bottom of the can, the pigment was more concentrated and I wound up with a mostly natural wood color now with splotches of reddish pigment. So, what I need is a good outdoor preservative with a long lasting stain to cover the splotchy areas. I also do not want to strip the old stain from the trees. That would be too labor and time intensive.

I asked the local expert about TWP and he was not impressed "It's okay", he said, "....but nothing to get excited about". He seemed to think it was more of an okay consumer grade product. Again, he recommended "Sansin" for my application because he said it was an excellent product and because it had a compatible composition which can be used over Superdeck.

I searched deckstainhelp for "Sansin", but found no reviews or discussion.

Has anyone used this product?

Would really like to hear someone's experience before buying and using it!

And for the deckstainhelp editors...might want to consider this product for a future review?

Thanks!
Paul

Sansin is a Canadian company with limited distribution in the States. I am sure it is a decent stain but have not used it. I highly doubt it is better then TWP. Maybe as good?

You should remove the Super Deck first. Applying a different brand over it will not give you the same results. You will be at the mercy of the "base" coating. Even the Sansin prep says it must be free of any previous coatings.

Interesting...
Good point. Stripping these huge sculptures is still probably not going to be worth it, though. There are hundreds of grooves and corners and crevices. I would also have to do all of that from a ladder and so the notion of using a power washer from a ladder is out. Then there is the neutralizer and what if that doesn't get completely washed out from all the grooves? On top of that, I have a newly planted street tree just a few feet away from where I will be working and the notion of getting water with stripper chemicals spraying onto the leaves or soaking into the ground next to the new tree is not very exciting.

I really just want to throw another coat of slightly darker stain/preservative over what I got and then not deal with it again for another couple years.
