Deck and Fence were installed late last spring by the builder. I live in Chicago, so: hot summer, cold snowy winter and plenty of rain and wind. The deck and fence are part sun/part shade. Both get morning sun - the deck gets very little afternoon sun, while the fence gets some afternoon sun. I want to put a gray wash on the deck, so I'm thinking of Defy Extreme Semi-Transparent in Driftwood for that. I'm looking to stain the somewhat cheap looking fence black. I'm sure we'll be replacing the builder-grade, poorly installed, dog-ear, rough-sawn, treated pine fence from Home Depot in the future, so I'm not so concerned about the fact that I can "never go back" once I stain it black. I don't want it to look like paint. Problem is, I can't figure out if there is a product out there that comes in black, that is well-regarded and that will work for this fence. Thoughts? Also, is Defy a good product for the gray wash on the deck? Thanks!!

Sure you can use the Defy Driftwood gray for the deck. Maybe TWP 1504 Black Walnut for fence? It is not exactly black but very dark.

First of all, thank you for saving me from Arbor Coat. I have two sample cans (semi transparent black, semi solid black) sitting in my garage that I was all set to try out. Very glad that I've avoided at least that mistake. I am looking for a black, not dark brown stain. Is there anything out there that will work reasonably well on a fence?

TWP 1504 Black Walnut is the darkest stain that we have used.
