I have a cedar deck with an attached screened in porch that is stained in SOLID Behr stain to match the house. The stain is currently peeling from the rails and some of the spindles. The main 6x6 cedar posts and cedar fascia are rough cut and seem to be holding the stain well, however there is some minor peeling on the fascia. The decking is unfinished composite. There is quite a bit of stained trim around the screens and window(no glass just screen) sills.
I don’t see myself taking everything down to bare wood to stain it in a semitransparent stain. How should I prep the deck for a new coat of SOLID stain? Which solid stain might I consider that can be color matched?
Do I need to strip the deck or just use a deck wash, lightly sand boards that are not rough cut where stained areas meet raw wood , leave what doesn’t’ come off, apply neutralizer and then stain with solid stain?
I’ve also considering tearing down the rails and spindles and belt sanding. Then just cleaning and restain the posts and fascia.
If removing or replacing the rails would make the job easier I would consider this also.
I live in the Missouri, deck gets mainly sun with some select shady spots that collect mold.
Advice Plzzzz? 😀

If it was us we would strip off what will come off and re stain with a solid stain. Might need to sand a few areas. Get a solid stain that matches the Behr but look at Flood or Canot brand.
