I am re-sealing (just for brightening and UV protection)an 8-year old ipe deck and railing. Previous experience with several oil-based materials was very poor -- ugly darkening and mold that was hard to remove within a year. Recent experience with a water-based deck furniture sealer (Banana River natural matte) was excellent, but they went out of business. What is the best replacement? Will Defy extreme work? If not, what is its shortcoming?

Make sure the wood is free of any coatings. If looking at Defy you would want the Defy Stain for Hardwoods as it is designed for your wood type. We have used it on IPE with good results and easy annual reapplications.

Thanks. Does Defy Stain for Hardwoods contain Zn Oxide nanoparticles? That was why I was considering Defy Extreme - I am not so concerned about penetration as UV protection on this 8-year old deck. Should I be?

The Defy Hadwood does not contain the zinc oxide. IPE needs to be done annually and penetration into the dense wood is very important for future applications.
