Greetings,

I recently had a screened in porch put on the back of my house and am looking for recommendations on what product to use to stain the wood. The porch is post/beam construction with several of the posts and parts of beams exposed to the elements. The wood is rough-sewn hemlock.

I've had some painters out to look at the job, but I want to do it myself. They recommended something oil-based. I also had a Sherwin-williams representative come out to the house and he suggested using Sherwin-Williams Log Home Stain:

It is a water-based product. It seems to be a newer product and I can't find many reviews on it. Has anyone used this product? Do you have thoughts regarding oil vs. water based for this rough-sewn hemlock? Other products you would recommend?

I appreciate any feedback ... thanks in advance.

We would not use anything from SW that they normally stock. Try the TWP 1500 Series or Armstrong Clark.
