The sun and moisture exposed areas of our deck were rotted, so we decided to replace 3/4 of the deck with new pressure-treated pine, while leaving 1/4 of the deck (covered and unrotted) in the old wood. We will also be replacing all of the railing.

The old wood remaining on 1/4 of the deck is aged and obviously darker than the new pine (as seen in the attached photo).

What stain would you recommend to create as much uniformity as possible between the old and new deck? Would I need to use a more opaque stain? Any recommendation would be helpful, as there are so many options.

Thank you in advance!

You should strip odd the old stain first and brighten the wood. Once removed you can look at a semi-solid or solid (opaque) stain so it blends between the new and old wood. Please read this about the new section:

Do you have any recommendations of products to use for stripping and brightening the old wood? Also, what brand of stain for a semi-solid stain would you recommend?
