I'm restaining a 15+ year old cedar deck in Seattle, where it rains a lot. The deck is fully shaded.
Based on the condition of the wood (not good) I was leaning toward Armstrong Clarke since the samples I got penetrated very well.
However, I'm worried about mildew. Is AC a bad stain for my climate, especially since the deck is shaded? The alternative is TWP 100, which didn't seem to penetrate as well and the color wasn't as dark or consistent. It sounds like it's better for mildew though.
I also tried Defy Extreme samples but I think my old deck needs something oil-based.
I don't really know if I'll have mildew issues or not. Basically I like the color/penetration of AC and the potential mildew prevention of TWP and I'm trying to decide which way to go.
TWP is better at mildew somewhat as it contains an EPA registered algecide. AC has mildewcides as well in it.
If not mold previously in the last 15 years then go with the AC.
