Newbie here with some questions and seeking advice. I will be stripping my old deck (not sure the age), brightening and staining. However, I also have added a new swing door onto my deck along with a new cedar fence that butts up to the deck.

I plan on using Defy stripper, Defy brightener and then an undetermined semi-trans stain on the floor boards and a solid white (two tone style) on the spindles/railings and possibly the lattice areas too.

Questions:

1. Should I be concerned about getting stripper on the house where the deck butts up against it? Should I cover the area with some plastic sheeting or can I simply not worry about it and hose it down?

2. Should I be concerned about getting stripper on the hardware on the new swing door? Should I tape this off or will the stripper not damage the hardware?

3. Should I strip and brighten the new cedar swing door as well, will it hurt or will it help treat the wood prior to staining?

4. Should I strip the lattice the same way as the rest of the deck (pump spray stripper on it and hose it down or power wash it? I am worried it is too weak to power wash the striper off. Speaking of the lattice, should I stain the lattice solid white to match the solid white stain that the spindles and railings will be?

5. Should I strip and brighten the new cedar fence I just installed prior to staining? This is new and I will probably use the same semi-trans stain on the fence that I use on the floor boards of the deck. Or should I just use a cleaner and then stain instead of stripping?

6. What is the best way to strip the lattice around the bottom of the deck? I can do it in place or I can try to remove it - there is some damage to it and I might beed to replace some lattice pieces, but not sure how to remove and then replace this - it is nailed in.

1. Prewet and rinse well
2. No concerns
3. Just clean and brighten the swing
4. Strip and pressure dashingly lightly. you do not have to get it all off the lattice as it should be painted white
5. Clean and brighten
6. Strip in place. Removing would be more of an issue.

Concentrate on the floor as it may be stubborn to remove all of it. Keep all vertices on the deck white and keep the floors, and tops of rails a semi-transparent. New fence can be either way.
