Deck Stain Questions and Answers

We just installed a new screened in room and outside deck and used Penofin Red can stain and our outside deck that is exposed and gets rained on has completely turned to black mold! Please help! Here are the details:
1. Lewisburg, Pennsylvania
2. Full afternoon sun, deck has western exposure
3. We used vertical grain wolmanized wood with Stabilyzr water repellant, Kiln Dried. Think it is pine. HM Stauffer and Sons, Leola, PA. Lumber yard recommended Penofins but didn't push it necessarily.
4. Turned black after only 2 months of application of stain.
5. We used Penofin in the red can. Wood was just installed and we cleaned the deck with Wolmans DeckBrite since the surface was dirty from the contractors. I then lightly sanded the deck. It was beautiful. Only applied one light coat of Penofins and within 3 hours it rained 🙁 Rain wasn't expected but happened by surprise. Black mold appeared within 2 months. It has been very wet lately with humid conditions. We even cleaned it again 2 weeks ago with Wolman's Deckbrite and it again is turning black!
I have not contacted Penofins nor the lumber yard. Could it be the wood? Or Penofins? We live in a small town and many of the top rating stains are not available. Please help! First, what cleaner/stripper? do we use and then what do we stain with? The covered screen room in which we used Penofins on as well looks fine with no mold appearing yet.

Oh, we used Penofin in the Red can Cedar tone.

It could be the wood, stain or just your environment that is causing this. I think the latter as the area that is enclosed is fine. I would strip it all off and brighten the wood. I would then use a stain that performs better then Penofin when it comes to preventing mold. Might want to get a few samples of TWP, Defy, Armstrong Clark and test them for a few months to see which works best. Then redo the entire deck next Spring with the stain that works for you.

Unfortunately, I can't get TWP or Defy in my area 🙁 Searched the internet and even called the company and no one returned my call. Any advice? Maybe I was calling the wrong place?
Thanks for the advice! You may be on to something saying that it could be the wood. We did clean 1/2 of it using Wolman's Deckbrite (not sure if that has a stripper, which is what I will need to look for) and with the rain this week, it started to get black again! Think I'm going to call the builder supply house and talk with them about the lumber product.
I'll keep everyone posted and will post pictures. Beautiful wood, just might be faulty??

Thanks! Yes, it is the perfect situation for mold to grow. Water, sun, humid conditions, etc. Hopefully, I can order TWP or Defy online 🙂
