Hi everybody,

I am new to the deck world, but I built my first deck at the end of March this year. It is 40ft x 16ft and made of pine. I have let it weather, and am now almost 4 months out from the build. I am starting to look into staining it and had some questions that I was hoping to get some help with...

1. I have black aluminum balusters (see pictures). Does anyone know a good way to stain a deck with these balusters? I was thinking about saran wrapping each section and then using painters tape at the top and bottom of each baluster....just seems like it will be some work!

2. Any suggestions on a good stain to use at this point that would look good with the black balusters and our taupe/brown house? I have a connection to Sherwin Williams, but do not want to use the discount if I will not get a good product.

3. Has anyone used a sprayer for application? If so, are there any suggestions for a good sprayer? Any other advise on staining a fairly large deck is appreciated!

Thank you all so much....I am completely lost with how to go about this project and GREATLY appreciate any help that you can be!!

Jeremy

This is how we would do this deck:

1. Prep the wood first with a Restore A Deck kit.
2. Let the wood dry for 48 hours.
3. Stain with Armstrong Clark or TWP.
4. We would stain the rail tops at post with a stain pad.
5. We would lightly spray the bottom rail that supports the spindles. We would immediately wipe off the excess stain that gets on the spindles with a rag.
5. Stain the floors with a stain pad.
6. Finish with steps and outside edges of the deck.

It is not as hard as you think. You and a helper can stain this deck in a couple of hours.

Anyone hit the deck yet with a golf ball?

No golf balls yet- we're close enough to the tee box that we don't get hit. Thanks for the help!
