Deck details -
Location: Shawnee, KS (KC Metro area)
Stain: Currently virgin wood, this will be the first coat on a new deck. Probably a color akin tohte redwood naturaltone shades.
Wood: PTP from Yellawood that has the MCA treatment and is their ground contact cedar shade (the slight cedar-ish color is in the MCA treatment soaked through the wood and it is pretty light on the 2x6 decking but darker on the 2x8 and 4x4s.) which is all that they offer here anymore.
Deck is ground level so access the underside is not possible.
I am just finishing the build on my replacement deck. I had the Yellawood rot issue and they replaced the wood so i took the old deck all the way down and rebuilt with new wood. The decking is spaced with 10d galv. nails as the spacer between adjacent boards so they are NOT snugged up tight (yellawood rep that came out required this, as they said that PTP should not be installed without a space between adjacent boards) As I search for a stain I wanted to know how you guys apply the finish *between the adjacent boards*? I can't coat the bottoms due to access, but in order for it to look good and be as protected as possible I wanted to make sure the rest of the board is coated. Do you use the pump sprayer for that, and if so I assume you coat the gaps and then pad the surface to even it all out and avoid dark streaks. Is that right? I ask because I REALLY don't want to build this deck a third time.
Also, One more thing. The Great Southern/yellawood rep says that they recommend you stain their wood and that the MCA preservative does not require and you should not let the deck cure before treating like was done with CCA. As soon as the deck is dry (as little as a few dry days after install is complete) you should stain the wood. You guys say wait 12 - 18 months before first coat. Confusion has certainly set in.
