We have been using Cabot 1406 semi solid oil decking stain for 15 years with very good results. Now, we can't get the same stain anymore and have to make a decision. Do we go with their watered down deck version, 17400 series that they can legally sell in Illinois which would be less work, but won't last long based upon reviews or bite the bullet and switch stains now. Would we have to chemically remove the old stain (it was stained 3-4 times and includes a gazebo which would be terrible to get to the roof area). Help, if you can! 🙂

No matter what I think you have to strip down and start over and that will be a chore. Closest product to this would be the Armstrong Clark semi-solid oil based stain but no sure if it will work on top of the Cabot. Most likely will not.

Thank you. I was afraid what your answer might be. I know we need to save the environment, but I want to protect my deck, too (without too much work). Have a great 4th of July.
