Based on what I've learned, an oil based stain is preferred over a water based one. So my question is how to tell what you're getting. Manufactures aren't so apparent about this.

For example, Olympic Maximum used to be a decent oil based stain then became a rather mediocre water based stain. Now I see a brand called Olympic Elite and think that it could be oil based but how could I tell for sure?

You are right about this. They have a tendency to hide the truth. Some stains are water based but they encapsulate an oil based molecule so they will say oil when it is really water. Confusing?

Just look at the cleanup. If it says water cleanup than it is water based. Mineral spirits or paint thinner cleanup and it will be oil based.

Good question.
