Hi Everybody!
I live in Austin Texas and just had a professional deck company rebuild my wooden deck and staircase, using really nice cedar. They did a great job until the stain ... when they used the *wrong* color. (They mislabeled the samples). All the cedar came out orange instead of brown!
So my main question is: How do we remedy this???
General specs:
1) cedar deck and stairs in hot Austin TX, partial shade.
2) Deck and stairs built 2 months ago, stained 1 month ago.
Questions: I'm not sure what to ask here, but I'm thinking:
1) Can we just apply a second coat, and of darker stain color? (to turn it brown) If not, need it be stripped first?
2) How long should we wait to apply the remedy?
3) What else should I be asking or doing to remedy the color error??
Much obliged,
Dan
What brand and type of stain was this?
I'm not sure. He's the builder so I thought he'd use the best. He said it was a combination stain & sealant.
I'm finding out the brand and type from the builder. Here's a pic of the sample versus what was stained (top vs. bottom) I'm after the bottom (darker) color here. Thanks.
Builder says he used: TWP Pecan #120
TWP Pecan is a brownish orange color, it is not straight brown. The top of the boards do not look like Pecan but then again it is new wood. Does your builder know that you should not stain brand new wood with TWP right away?
Most likely you need to strip if off and start over. I would wait until Spring and do it then.
