Three years ago I built a 12x14 cedar deck. I lightly sanded and stained with Sikkins less than a month later. The next spring I had to sand off the stain and re-stain with Sikkins. This spring I've had to sand again and I'm now ready to stain. As you can imagine I'm not going to use Sikkins! That product was touted to be the "number one" deck stain. None finer! Yea right! I notice Sikkins is not on your top stain rating list. I plan to re-stain using TWP. Good idea? Thank you

I would give TWP a shot. One of the issues could be the sanding. Sanding is not the proper way to prep outside wood. If you sand the wood too smooth then the stain does not penetrate as well. Improper prepping is the #1 reason deck stains fail. You are better off using a stain stripper and a wood brightener to prep.

You want the wood as porous as possible!

I sanded using #80 grit paper. The wood surface is definitely not smooth. I'm hoping the surface is porous now! With the aging of the wood and the aggressive sanding I hope to have better luck. My problem now is waiting for the wood to dry out. We've had a lot of rain recently here in Nebraska.

You should clean the wood now after the sanding with a deck cleaner to open to pores more and remove any sand dust that is clogging the pores.
