Hello,
I purchased a house a few months back and are in the process of restoration. As you can see in the pictures the back deck needs to be refinished. This deck is mostly covered with the exception the stairs which shows the most wear. My plan is to use the Restore A Deck products for stripping and brightening recommend by this site. However, I am not sure if this product will adequately remove the existing finish. Can you tell from the pictures what the existing finish is and if the RAD product will do the job?? If not what would be a solution for removing the existing finish.
After successful clean and prep I plan on applying TWP100 series 100 cedar tone stain to the deck. My question is can this TWP stain be applied to a set of Adirondack chairs and perform as good as on the deck??
I cannot tell from the picture what the old stain is. It looks like the RAD stripper should be able to remove the majority of it. I would strip as much as possible. Try to get off 90% or more. A little leftover should blend okay with the TWP 101 cedartone.
You can apply TWP 10 wood chairs.
Thanks for the tip. One last question. Should I apply the RAD product with a power washer via injecting or deck pump spray it then power wash? I am suspicious that multiple existing coats of stain are present, one of which may be of a semi solid type. The new picture attached kind of shows this, which is why I originally asked if you could make out the type of stain.
This will be a problem. Stain strippers will have issues removing the stain in this picture. At this point the multiple coats are basically filming on the surface like a paint. RAD Stripper and all other deck stain strippers will not remove paints or excessively over applied stains such as this picture.
The previous owners left you with a mess to fix. You can strip what you can but you will need to sand to get it all off.
Again thanks for the advice, I think 🙂 I was starting to conclude the same thing. New plan is to use floor sander with 80 grit to get the top layer and possibly the some second layer off. Next use the RAD stripper and power washer to remove the remaining. Lastly hit it with the Brightener to Ph balance the wood. Do you agree or recommend another strategy??
Sounds like a plan!
My deck is extremly dry. Should I apply a sealer berfore staining it?
Thanks,
Mike
No, stains are already sealers.
