About 30 years ago when we built our house we used a Cuprinol semi transparent preservative stain on the advice of our lumber dealer. It was, according to the literature, a sort of hybrid, which used an emulsified mix of water and oil so the water would theoretically evaporate leaving the oil in the wood, so you got the benefits of an oil stain, but with the benefits of reduced VOCs and water clean up.

Sounds dubious as all hell, but it worked as promised. it went on to our rough pine barnboard siding nicely and still looks reasonably good now, without ever having been touched since. I'd like to recoat it, but the product seems to have disappeared from the market. I got to wonder why, it seemed to offer the best of both worlds, and was head an shoulders above the nasty acrylic "stains" they sell now that go on as a layer and are prone to peeling.

Anyone know anything about this product and what happened to it?

Cuprinol has been off the market for years. I believe it was an oil emulsified water based stain.

This may be a good substitute:
