I live in central Ohio, have a 10 year old pressure treated desk with cedar railing, gets sun in morning thru early afternoon, then shade the rest of the day. I've applied semi-transparent SuperDeck stain to both the floor and railings over the years (every 3+ years) however this year I've had a problem with multiple carpenter bees drilling into the cedar railings more than most years in the past. This year I also had the unwelcoming problem of woodpeckers chiseling out parts of my deck to get to the bees, resulting in deck repair. I've filled and patched the holes, but do not want to have a repeat issue next year. My question is, what would the be the best way to deter these bees from drilling back into my cedar railings next spring? Perhaps applying a solid stain to the railings instead of semi? I've researched all the bees forums and nobody mentions how to prevent from a deck point of view - only how to rid the bees once they have drilled. And if you rid the bees, you also rid the woodpeckers. Just short of me taking time off work to do watch duty on my deck next spring, I'm at my wits end. I've read the reviews on this site for advice and stain ratings, and thought to post my plight in the hopes someone has any ideas...thanks

Try Bug Juice insect additive for deck stains.
