I have a 40 year old cedar home. The siding is rough sawn board and bat as well as shingles. I have used Olympic transparent stain in the past and I have heard oil based stains promote mildew. Well, I have mildew to clean and I do not want it back. Can I now use a waterbased stain? If so what do you recommend?
It would not be a good idea to put a water based on top of an oil based stain. You would want to strip it all off if you want to do this.
Do I have any options for oil based stains that will do a better job of not promoting mildew? The current wood os quite weathered and several years past when stain should have been reapplied.
TWP Stains do better then other oil based stains when it come to preventing mildew.
What is the best oil based stain for cedar siding in New York?
TWP 1500 or Armstrong Clark.
