So I read all of the stain reviews and have narrowed it down to a few contenders, the leader being TWP 1500, but I would like additional thoughts as well. We built a new pergola (just posts and cross beams) over a paver patio, out of pressure treated pine last year during early Summer. The plan was to allow the wood to be exposed for 1-2 months and then stain it, but life got in the way and we ran out of time before winter struck. So unfortunately, our pine pergola sat bare in the elements for a full year, including through the harsh Ohio winter. We are planning to stain in the next few weeks, but want to make sure that we get the right stain product. The issues are that the wood has already been exposed for a year, the pergola is pine and it will face harsh weather - both cold/snowy winters and hot, sunny Summers. So the most important factor for us is that the wood is protected and we get minimal fading (wear is non-issue since there is no walking surface area). Based on this, do you think the TWP 1500 is a good choice and would you recommend anything different?
Also, how would you prep the wood? Just the classis cleaning and brightening before staining? Should anything be done since it is still bare and has been exposed so long?
Thanks so much in advance!
Just clean and brighten for prep. Yes on the 1500 Series. Tarp those pavers well so they do not get the stain on them! Prep products will not harm them.
Thanks! One more question - what do you think will be the easiest and best way to apply the stain to this pergola? I brush seems unnecessary - should we use a pad, just rags, etc?
Flat exterior stain pad.
