Howdy deckstain.com!

First, I would like to say thank you for creating this site and for all the assistance that this site has provided -it has been a great help!

I have a challenging question:

What is the best stain for the wood deck of a battleship? We are going to start cycle replacement of the deck of a battleship in Texas and I am looking to stain the deck rather than paint it as it has been done the last 20yrs (which has not helped the wood very much). The catch is I need a stain that is durable for the harsh Texas sun, can take 125,000 people walking over it annually, can be tinted to a dark blue color, and can go over KDAT southern yellow pine 4x4s and teak (the deck is yellow pine with a teak boundary). I would like to lay down some stain over a test area and see how it does for a year or two before applying it to the new sections of deck that we will be putting in.

You might have asked your self why are they staining the decks of a battleship? Well, in peace time they were kept bare and were basically sanded everyday, but during WWII the wood decks of the ship were painted or stained dark blue as part of the camouflage scheme the ship wore to help make her less visible. We present the ship to the public as she appeared at the end of WWII.

Thanks again for all your help and for this great site!

Best Regards,

Travis

Honestly there is not any stain that will withstand that much traffic. The stains we rate and compare cannot be tinted either. Most are semi-transparent that come in stock colors.

For your area it would be best to not stain and just periodic clean. Nothing will handle the traffic.
