We spent a whole weekend cleaning, scrubbing and powerwashing our very weathered 15+ year old-treated 26 x 15 foot deck and then it pretty much rained for a month here in MN. So we now have several days (that will finally include the weekend) of no rain, and we plan to sand and hopefully finish with Defy Extreme. But the cleaning was now 5 weeks ago.... We really don't want to start over at this point. Is this a really bad idea?

Will a light sanding be enough to open the wood for a stain? (hoping to sand Saturday and then stain Sunday).

Thanks!
(Great site!)

If you sand you should lightly pressure wash after to remove the sand dust, let dry for 24-48 hours, stain when dry. Sanding does not open the wood grain but rather closes it.

Hi

I have this same issue except I stripped, brightened, then sanded our 15+ yr 17 x 14 deck 4-5 weeks ago in SE PA. We didn't brighten it again that day because a horrible storm was coming in and we had to get inside rather quickly. We hosed it off before after sanding but did not rebrighten.

We have had several really bad storms since then so there is no dust floating around. As soon as it would be dry out, it would rain or the temps woud be above 90°. Finally we seem to have some dry weather that is also under 90° this weekend. Do I need to do anything else before we restain? Can we just stain it like we originally planned and be OK? Thanks for your advice & love the site!

If the wood is clean and has not discolored from the UV than go ahead and stain!

We would love seeing before and after pictures!

We finally got the deck done. After the horrible winters we have had we needed to redo our deck. It was initially done using Cabots about 4 years ago and that is what we replaced it with. Our deck is 15-20 years old and this is may be the last renewal before we replace boards in the future.

Unfortunately our deck is connected to our neighbor (it is like one big deck with dividers in between) but I can walk onto his deck. So we will eventually replace the boards that begin and end on our deck. The previous owners of the houses were siblings.

We stripped it using Cabot's Problem solver wood stripper followed by Cabots problem solver wood brightener. Since we were removing an old Cabots product we stuck with products. The stain we used was Cabots oil solid stain. I am grateful for this site because I would have never known about the brightening aspect of the prep process and have told others about this site.

We had to sand off the most heavily stained areas since we used a solid stain before. The day we sanded a bad storm came in so although we rinsed off the deck, we had to get inside. Afterwards there was a spate of bad weather that either had it raining or drying out from the rain.

The last picture shows the finished deck from Sunday. We did not put the furniture back on until yesterday. Just wanted to make sure it was all dry and it was 90+ degrees. So now I can sit on our deck and it looks great again.

Thanks again.
