Hi,

This may have been answered before, but this forum is immense, so:

I have a deck at least 10 yrs old that has a solid stain applied by the previous owners.  The articles on this site have convinced me that applying a semi-transparent stain would be a waste of time and money.  Still, I need to re-stain it, apparently with another solid stain.

What steps do I need to take if I'm applying a solid stain (I know Flood is preferred here) on a deck that currently has an old, worn solid stain?  Do I need to use a cleaner and/or brightener  since the old stain isn't going to come off, or can I simply pressure wash, let dry, and restain? I want to make sure I do this as correctly as possible.

Thanks!

When reapplying a solid stain we prep by stripping off as much as we can. Use a stain stripper and pressure washing. It is okay to leave the stain on the wood that is still intact as you will cover this with the new solid stain.

Is there any particular stripper you would recommend that would do a remotely decent job on a solid color stain? Are there any that I could run through a pressure washer?

You do not have to remove much or all of the solid stain when stripping, just what is loose and not intact. Any deck stripper should help with this.
