I have 1000 sq. foot ipe deck which was build last summer. we did not stain it yet. I want to do it right now. Can some body walk me trough the steps what should I do? And what products should I use. The deck in Philadelphia.

The biggest problem I have right know its sap spots on the deck. I thinking of using turpentine to remove them. any comments, suggestions?
Thank you

Greg,

We have never found a product that removes sap well from wood. It is like glue. A solvent thinner works somewhat.

For the deck, there are numerous articles on the site about this. In general:

1. Clean and brighten wood for prep
2. Let dry for a couple of days.
3. Stain with a penetrating type stain.

For your area you should look at the Armstrong Clark.

And another question; when I try to use turpentine to remove sap it did a job bit left spot on a deck. How can I remove this spot?

Greg, not sure on the spot. RAD kits will work for the cleaning.

I have an ipe deck that was stained two years ago. I dont think it was the right stain for the deck as i read that ipe should have penetrating oil. I want to use oil now but dont know if i need to strip it first or can i just clean it?

If there is still an older coating on the wood then you will need to strip. If not, use a deck cleaner.
